A Flexible Work Environment is the Future of the Spa Industry

Adaptation to the Pandemic

Throughout the pandemic, the health and wellness sector has seen big changes as consumers adapted to life without gyms and fitness centers, regular doctors visits, and even self-care activities like massages and facials. But as we progressed, just as consumers found ways to continue to invest in their health, the spa industry pivoted to ensure safety throughout its facilities.

As the spa industry has adapted to ensure safety among spa professionals and guests, have they adapted to allow flexibility for their employees? At Spa Space, we empower the freedom of wellness for our partner facilities, spa professionals, and guests. One part of the freedom of wellness is allowing spa professionals the ability to work when and where they want.

How Spa Space Has Adjusted

When asked about the creation of Spa Space, cofounder Ilana Alberico said, “We started developing Spa Space before COVID-19 changed the world. The intent was to create a technology solution to address the customer, therapist, and spa facility challenges we observed over the past 20 years as spa owners and operators. Now more than ever, the world is seeking the healing power of touch, but the demand is for more personalization. Spa Space makes that possible.”

What Spa Space Offers

The goal of creating our Spa Space technology was to put more power in the hands of everyone involved with the spa management process. Spa Space service providers, or our freelance massage therapists and estheticians, are given plenty of freedom and flexibility with work. Our wellness providers are able to control their own schedule so they set their own hours and availability, and are able to choose where to work, meaning they can pick which facilities they want to provide services out of.  Our spa management app handles all of our spa staffing as well as booking for guests, and it also covers payment so our providers can be paid in days, not weeks.

Flexibility is the Future

As the world finds its new sense of normal after the pandemic, there’s a completely new mindset with priorities shifting to work being seen as second to managing family and health. Those able to continue to work remotely are choosing to stay home but in the spa industry, as we’re a hands-on field, we have to be willing to allow flexibility in other areas. With Spa Space, we offer unlimited paid time off for salaried employees and give our service providers complete control over their work schedules.

A recent study conducted by ISPA found that flexible scheduling and the ability to balance work and home life are of high importance to service providers. Giving our service providers that flexibility is crucial to the Spa Space strategy and will be the future for all of the spa industry.

Implementing a more flexible work environment increases the likelihood of not only retaining staff, but also helps recruiting efforts. And the positives don’t stop there. “Flexible workers are more likely to be engaged, which yields significant advantages for employers- potentially generating 43% more revenue and improving performance by 20%, compared to disengaged employees,” says a study by CIPD.
